Well, absolutely an A+ an all levels. More of a Gabriel era fan myself. I nonetheless will dub this recording my favourite of all the Genesis live concerts!. Several reasons: Tony still calls Duke his favourite album and I feel as if this is the prime for the post-Gabriel band - not too commercial as yet. The "home town" Lyceum crowd (audible throughout, a definite plus for me with live recordings) charges up the lads, no question. Palpable energy here! The band is free and comfortable with everything in the set. Phil - while perhaps having a pop too many before taking stage on the night - is gloriously aggressive. The double drum playing - especially on Los Endos is as good as you'll hear anywhere. Love the slowed off tempos on Ripples and Crawlers. This one has amazing audio quality and the addition of stories and intros off the video make this a true triumph for Mike (Pool_of Tears), and SAB (EQ). If you are a first time collector, this is a MUST HAVE. Peace! [jrromman] For the most part, by far the best recording and mastering I've heard of this gig - my only beef is that the mastertapes it was taken from have suffered a bit in places over the years: Squonk in particular, but also Behind The Lines through to Duke's End, and the final section of I Know What I Like, all wobble noticeably and in Squonk's case painfully so. Fortunately these tracks are all much better on As Good As Gold, so I've just made my own compilation of the two - the mastering isn't hugely different, just a bit less bass on the AGAG versions. The rest of the tracks on Perfect Lyceum are indeed 'perfect' - I much prefer the sound of them to The Lyceum Tapes 30th Anniversary Edition remaster (sorry TM). [FakePlasticDunk] (also Say It's Alright Joe has a persistent interference noise on it - again, fortunately the version on As Good As Gold knocks the socks off it) [FakePlasticDunk] Strange that no one commented that this version has a very noticeable high pitch (the tape runs fast), and weirder still that it wasn't corrected for release. That leaves The Lyceum Tapes the best version for me, as it has always been. (Didn't listen to As good as gold, but seeing the comments I don't think it's necessary. Thanks !) [itsover2u] |
